Patna:

Patna is one of the oldest cities, known as 'Patliputra' in ancient times - more than 3000 years ago, is located at the bank of the holy river the Ganges. Historically, this place has been the most famous seat of learning in the world since ages. The Patliputra has the legacy to gift the concept of “University” to the world. The two most popular ancient universities, namely the Nalanda and the Vikramshila, that was then the Centre of knowledge creation, had attracted visitors from across the world including China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea being few important countries to be cited among others. The ancient Patliputra city was home to some of the greatest minds of the time like Aryabhatta who gifted the concept of “ZERO(0) and pi(π)”- the two unparalleled contribution to the knowledge of science and engineering and also worked on Astronomy, Algebra and Trigonometry that still forms the core content of Mathematics in modern times as on date. Similarly, another eminent treasure of knowledge on polity and economy to the world came from Chanakya, the architect of revived Patliputra in 320 BC. Important historical legends from this region, who spread the message of “peace and brotherhood” far and wide across the world, include Lord Gautam Buddha – the founder of Buddhism, Lord Mahavira – the founder of Jainism, and Guru Govind Singh – the founder of Khalsa (that means, “the Pure” in Punjabi). Last but not the least, modern Patna too does not lag far behind. It has produced illustrious personalities like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of independent India, many academicians of repute like Sir Sachidanand Sinha, renowned jurists like Dr. Justice Sir Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh, industrialists like Mr. Anil Aggarwal - the founder of Vedanta Group, and social & political figures who immensely contributed to the growth of the country.

Institute:

Indian Institute of Technology Patna came into existence in 2008 by an Act of Parliament along with 7 other IITs, then referred to as the 2nd generation IITs. IIT Patna mission is to achieve "eminence" through vision of "excellence". Over a period of more than one and half decade, now IIT Patna has created a mark for itself in academics, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and employability of graduates (B. Tech), postgraduates (M.Tech./MSc.) and doctorates. IIT Patna alumni are spread in organizations ranging from top rated universities, multi-nationals, government organizations in India and abroad. The success story of IIT Patna alumni, creating a niche for themselves, has truly established the IIT Patna vision and mission.

The Institute is committed to encourage, inculcate and foster among students, core competency in specific branch of training focused with holistic approach through vibrant and competitive edge to develop practical skill in academics, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship aimed at producing leaders for tomorrow. Keeping stated objectives in mind, apart from academics, students are encouraged to participate in wide ranging co-curricular activities, industry internships in India and abroad, foreign visits in connection with project & research, and visits to industrial units to enable a wholesome training boosting their skills and knowledge. 

Academic Programs:

Currently, IIT Patna has 10 academic departments that runs 11 B.Tech programs, 9 B.Tech. - M.Tech. dual degree, 1 B.Tech. (IITP).- MBA (NITIE, Mumbai) dual degree, 15 M.Tech. specialisations, 3 M.Sc. programs in addtion to Ph.D. in all the 10 departments.

Apart from ongoing academic programs stated above, keeping in mind the need of ever growing youth population in the country with enough potential to excel, IIT Patna has taken a lead to initiate 3 year undergraduate programs  through hybrid (online/in campus) mode of instruction in market demand driven fast emerging subject area like Computer Science with focus on (Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security) and Businees Management with focus on (Business Administration, Accounting, Financial Management & Reporting, Strategic Management). The course structure of businees program is aligned with global professional body (ACCA, CIMA, CPA)  as well as national professional body (ICAI, ICSI and NSE) qualifications. The two UG programs starting in the academic year 2023-24 are B.Sc.– Computer Science and Data Analytics (CSDA) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) are designed with NEP-2020 features comprising entry, exit, re-entry and credit bank facility in compliance of the National Education Policy (NEP) implemented by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of INDIA. IIT Patna is perhaps the 1st IIT to implement and start flexible and modular academic curriculum with skill focused teaching- learning activity from the academic year 2023-24.

Campus Location:

The permanent campus of IIT Patna though located at distance of 35 KM from the main city is well connected through Airport, Railway stations (Patna/Danapur/Patliputra Junction and Bihta station) and Patna bus stand at Gandhi Maidan. The campus location map is given below for reference.
