Guidelines for Award of Post-Doctoral Fellowship
Scheme and Objective:
Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IITP) is offering a limited number of Institute Post Doctoral Fellowships (PDF) to attract highly motivated bright scientists and engineers to carry out advanced research in IITP. These PDF research positions will be temporary positions. It is anticipated that presence of PDFs in the IITP will further stimulate the research environment and output of the Institute.
Eligibility:
Candidates having a Ph.D. degree in Science, Engineering and Humanities can apply. Candidates must have 1st class (6.5 CPI/CGPA in the scale of 10) in the degree preceding to Ph.D. with at least three publications in reputed peer-reviewed journals.
A Candidate who has recently submitted her/his doctoral thesis for the Ph.D. degree in appropriate discipline can also apply for a PDF position in IITP subject to the condition that she/he will furnish the proof of award of Ph.D. degree at the time of interview.
Age Limit:
The age limit for applicants for the PDFs will be maximum 35 years (relaxed by 5 years for women and reserved category).
How to Apply & Selection:
Candidates for PDF shall apply in the prescribed format (Application Form).
The candidates called for interview shall have to make a presentation of their research plan before the selection committee in the concerned academic department.
The selection committee shall interview the candidates and discuss the research plan in detail. At least two letters of recommendation/reference from peers regarding the research capabilities and other attributes of the applicant must be submitted along with the application.
Reservation:
Reservation will be done as per Government of India rules.
Duration:
The duration of the fellowship will be initially for a period of 1 year, extendable for a further period of one more year based on the satisfactory progress of the PDF and the recommendation of the Department with which the concerned PDF is attached with.
Fellowship Grant:
Fellowship Amount: Rs. 49,000/- per month + HRA as per rules.
HRA / Accommodation:
Suitable campus accommodation as per IIT Patna norms, if available, may be provided. If accommodation is not provided by the Institute then HRA may be allowed as per Central Government norms applicable to IIT Patna. The fellowship amount may be taken as basic for calculating the HRA.
Contingency Grant:
A contingency grant of Rs. 30,000/- per annum will be provided to the PDF for research purposes.

Permission for Conference:
Either National or International Conference can be permitted provided funds available in the contingency grant of the concerned Post-Doctoral Fellow.
Responsibilities:
Apart from the research pursued by the Post-Doctoral Fellow, Supervisor/Head of the respective department (with which the PDF is attached) may assign academic responsibilities.
Leave:
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be eligible for leave with fellowship not exceeding 30 days in a year for each completed year of the fellowship. The leave can be availed on a prorata basis for the duration (on a 6 months’ basis) of the Fellowship completed.
Postdoctoral Performance Assessment Committee (PAC):
The performance of the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be assessed by the Performance Assessment Committee (PAC) consisting of the Head of the Department (HoD) as the Chairperson, the supervising/mentoring faculty member and two faculty members (need not necessarily be from the same Department) in the area of research carried out by the Fellow. If the HoD happens to be the mentoring/supervising faculty member for the PDF, then one of the other two members of the Committee will assume the chairperson’s role. The PAC will be constituted by the Director, IIT Patna on the recommendation of the Dean (Academic). The PAC will meet every year to assess the performance of the Post-Doctoral Fellow. The candidate should present a progress report detailing the research work carried out and research findings supported by reprints/preprints/manuscripts of the papers published/accepted for publication or communicated/research reports for this purpose.
Termination:
If the Post-Doctoral Fellow wishes to leave the program before the end of the tenure, she/he can do so with prior approval of the HoD (concern department) giving one month’s notice. The fellowship may be terminated by the Institute if the performance /conduct of the Fellow is unsatisfactory after giving one month’s notice to the Fellow.
